- Players alternate placing one stone on an empty intersection (board size depends on the mode offered).
- Orthogonally connected stones form groups. Liberties are empty adjacent intersections.
- Fill a group's last liberty to capture it and remove those stones.
- When both players pass, count territory and captures (and any komi if applied) to decide the winner.
